WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - The Seawolves began their weekend series against Monmouth in overwhelming fashion as they took the series opener 9-3 at the Jersey Shore.
How It Happened
- Stony Brook struck early in the top of the first as Ella Hayes led off the game with a single before advancing to second on a misplay by the right fielder and later to third on a passed ball. From there, a deep fly ball from Rachael Brown was enough to bring her in and make it 1-0.
- The Seawolves would tack on another run each of the next two innings on an RBI single from Malorie Hill and a double steal attempt that allowed Mia Vannelli to score.
- After a two-out RBI single from Ella Stevinson in the bottom of the third cut Stony Brook's lead down to two, Ashlyn Burgess would make it 4-1 two innings later on a two-out single through the left side.
- The lead grew to five in the top of the sixth after Karri Pritchard led things off with an opposite field home run. Then, following a June McGrath pinch-hit double, Marissa Thalassinos blooped one to left to bring in another run and make it 6-1.
- Pritchard and Thalassinos each picked up another RBI in the top of the seventh, while a throwing error by the shortstop brought in another run as Stony Brook took a 9-1 lead.
- Though the Hawks were able to slightly eat into the lead with a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh, Crimson Rice soon shut them down to finish off the complete game victory.
