Cambridge, Mass. – The Stony Brook volleyball team has been tabbed third in the America East preseason coaches’ poll, the conference office announced Wednesday afternoon. The ranking is the highest for Stony Brook since being chosen third in 2006 and tied for the best in program history.

The Seawolves received one first-place vote and totaled 28 points.

In head coach Coley Pawlikowski’s impressive debut campaign, Stony Brook finished in a tie for second in the America East regular season standings and reached the conference semifinals.

SBU returns 10 letterwinners and six starters from 2013, including second-team all-conference middle blocker Stephanie McFadden. McFadden, a junior, broke the single-season Division I school record for block assists with 115 and was second in the league at 1.00 blocks per set. An America East All-Championship honoree, she led the league in aces per set (0.43) and was an integral part of the Stony Brook serving unit that finished tenth in the nation in aces per set (1.69).

Junior outside hitter Melissa Rigo, the 2012 America East Rookie of the Year and an All-Academic Team selection last season, finished second on the team and seventh in the conference in kills per set at 2.69.

Redshirt senior middle blocker Evann Slaughter will be back on the court in 2014 after missing last season with a torn ACL. A two-time all-conference selection, Slaughter has led the team and been in the America East’s top 10 in blocks in all three of her seasons.

Stony Brook opens the season at DePaul Aug. 29 at 8 p.m. and hosts Fordham in its home opener Sept. 9 at 7 p.m.
