Volleyball falls in three sets to Binghamton

Vestal, N.Y. - Senior Alicia Nelson (Apple Valley, Minn.) tallied a match-high 19 kills but the Stony Brook University volleyball team had its four-match winning streak snapped with a 3-0 (25-21, 25-21, 25-22) loss to Binghamton on Friday night.

Nelson added 10 digs and hit .326 but no other Stony Brook player had more than four kills. Senior Kelsey Sullivan (Hamilton, Va) chipped in with 28 assists and nine digs while freshman Laura Hathaway (Warsaw, N.Y.) led SBU with 11 digs.

Stony Brook led 7-6 early in the first set but the Bearcats then went on a 9-3 run to take a 15-10 lead. SBU got within 23-21 but Binghamton answered with two straight points to take a 1-0 lead.

In the second set the Seawolves grabbed a 16-11 lead following a kill from sophomore Evann Slaughter (Clinton, Md.). But the Bearcats then scored 12 of the next 16 points to go ahead 23-20 and Binghamton closed the set out a few points later on an SBU ball handling error.

The Seawolves led early in the third set at 10-8 after a kill from freshman Taylor Gillie (Fort Wayne, Ind.). The Bearcats scored the next four points though and never trailed again.

Binghamton led by as many as four at 17-13 but Stony Brook slowly chipped away and got within 23-22 on a kill from freshman Katrina Doherty (Irvine, Calif.). But the Bearcats once again had an answer, scoring the next two points to close out the set and the match.

Stony Brook returns to action on Sunday, traveling to take on first-place Albany. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
