Costello recorded 19 kills and a career-high 19 digs for her 12th double-double of the season

Stony Brook, N.Y. -Fueled by double-doubles from Melissa Rigo, Hannah Dolan, Kaitlin Costello and Kathy Fletcher and a career-high 28 digs by Lo Hathaway, the Stony Brook volleyball team scored a come-from-behind win over UMBC (19-25, 25-21, 23-25, 25-19, 15-9) Friday night at Pritchard Gymnasium.

Rigo recorded a career-high 27 digs and 16 kills, while Costello finished with 19 kills and a personal-best 19 digs for Stony Brook (12-13, 6-2 America East). Dolan dished out 47 assists to match a career-best and chipped in 10 digs, and Fletcher had 12 kills and 14 digs.

Stony Brook's defensive efforts held UMBC (14-9, 5-3 America East), who came into the match leading the league in hitting percentage, to just .090 hitting.

"I think we started slow, and it's really important that we rebounded from that. We understood how important it was to pick it up individually and as a group. When we did that and we learned how to trust each other, we kept getting momentum. I think that's ultimately what led to the win tonight."


UMBC used a hot start to race out to an early 1-0 advantage in the match. The second stanza remained close throughout. With the score knotted at 20-all, UMBC committed an attack error and Dolan followed with a kill on an assist from Rigo to give the Seawolves a 22-20 advantage. The Retrievers were called for another miscue but scored a kill to keep it a two-point set at 23-21.  Rigo dished to Dolan again, and Fletcher secured the win and evened the match with a smack.



In the third frame, Stony Brook trailed by four, 22-18, but stormed back to tie the score at 23-23 on an ace by Costello. UMBC put the set away with two consecutive kills.

The Seawolves took control early in the fourth stanza. Down by one, 5-4, Costello tied the set with a kill. The Retrievers committed an attack error, and Rigo slammed one home as Stony Brook went ahead by two, 7-5. UMBC tallied a kill on the ensuing rally, but Rigo responded with another smack to keep the lead at two, 8-6. The officials awarded Stony Brook a point after giving the UMBC bench a yellow card, and Gillie scored a kill for a 10-6 advantage. SB led by as many as 11 and fended off a late comeback attempt by the guests, locking up a fourth-set win on a kill by Rigo.

Costello scored a kill to give Stony Brook an 11-9 edge in the decisive fifth frame. Rigo took over the contest thereafter, tallying four consecutive kills before icing the match on a solo stuff. 

The Numbers Game

  • Taylor Gillie recorded nine kills and a team-best four blocks, while Costello and Stephanie McFadden had three stuffs apiece.
  • Nicole Vogel had nine assists and four digs in three sets of work.
  • The Seawolves finished with 105 digs compared to 86 for the Retrievers.
