Volleyball edged at Binghamton in five sets

Final Stats

Vestal, N.Y. - Junior Evann Slaughter (Clinton, Md.) and freshmen Melissa Rigo (East Northport, N.Y.) and Stephanie McFadden (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) all recorded double-digit kills, but the Stony Brook volleyball team could not hold on to a 2-1 set lead over Binghamton, losing to the Bearcats 3-2 (25-19, 22-25, 18-25, 25-15, 15-12) Friday night at West Gym. Rigo finished with 18 kills and 11 digs. McFadden had 12 kills, and Slaughter had 11 kills and four blocks.

The Numbers Game

  • Rigo has now recorded double-digit kills in 18 straight matches to begin the season.
  • Rigo produced her ninth double-double of the season.
  • Freshman Nicole Vogel (Costa Mesa, Calif.) also recorded a double-double after picking up 22 assists and 11 digs, her fifth double-double of the year.
  • McFadden led the Seawolves with a .320 hitting percentage. 
  • Stony Brook recorded a season-high 12 blocks, led by freshman Shelby Tietjen (Smithtown, N.Y.) and her three block solos and three block assists.

Key Moments

  • In the first set, Stony Brook never led but was within three points for most of the time until late when two SB attack errors sandwiched a Binghamton ace that resulted in three straight Bearcats points to put Binghamton up 24-18.
  • Stony Brook rebounded nicely in the second set to hit .343 and block four shots. The set was tied 21-21 when McFadden loaded up for a kill, followed by a Slaughter kill to make it 23-21. Tietjen did the rest as she solo blocked a pair of Binghamton attacks to finish off the set win.
  • The Seawolves gained momentum with a third-set victory after capitalizing on seven BU attack errors and two service errors.
  • Binghamton owned the fourth set, going up 10-5 early and winning by 10 points.
  • The Seawolves fell behind 10-6 in the deciding set, but battled back to get within one point, 12-11. Kristin Hovie, who had a game-high 21 kills, made it 13-11 with a kill. Rigo answered with a kill of her own to make it 13-12, but the Bearcats finished the match with a pair of kills. BU had three service aces in the set.
