Coach's Corner - A Note From the Desk of Coach Glassman
Nov. 23, 2011
Stony Brook, N.Y. - Greetings and welcome to the Fall Harvest edition of the 2011 season Coach's Corner - a newsletter to keep you informed and up to date on Stony Brook Tennis!
It was another extremely busy fall campaign as the months of September and October saw at least one or both teams in action for seven of the nine fall weekends. The fall, or non-traditional season, is designed to give us an idea of where we are at as a team and what we need to work on for the spring season.
On the women's side - we finished with the ITA Regional Championships at Yale. This year's entry topped even last years as we had five singles players in the main draw as well as two doubles teams. Nini Lagvilava '13 advanced to the quarterfinals before falling in three sets to Yale. It was a record setting performance as no Seawolf had ever gone that deep into the tournament. When the rankings come out next week - there is a good chance that Nini could become our first ever nationally ranked individual. On the men's side we sent five singles players and two doubles teams to Cornell for the Regional Championships.
Freshmen Stefan Ilic '15 and Francis Bertrand '15 both made it through the qualifying tournament to advance to the main draw, and Francis notched a first round win. Nikita Fomin '14 came in as the 13th seed and after receiving a bye in the first round he knocked off a player from Penn before falling to Brown in the round of 32.
Another highlight of the fall was our mixer at Port Jefferson Country Club. Head pro Eric Dunnett was gracious enough to invite the Seawolves for a meet and greet at the club on September 18. Over twenty members turned out to meet the Seawolves and play mixed doubles. It was a great event and we're planning to do it again in the spring.
In this edition of Seawolves Profiles we take a closer look at a senior and a freshman.
Prerana Appineni is a senior from Hyderabad, India and majors in Business Management. In addition to being one of the most talented players to ever represent Stony Brook - Pre has also been one of our most clutch performers. She has recorded singles wins over Boston U in the conference semifinals each of the last two seasons. When it comes to big matches there has been nobody like Prerana to represent us, and we will count on her again this season to come up big for the Seawolves. Pre is going to graduate in three and a half years and next year at this time - don't be surprised if she is an apprentice at the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation. She has a keen eye for fashion and design and by combining the two - there will be structures that bear her name in the very near future.
Stefan "Stonewall" Ilic is a freshman from Flushing, NY. With the National Tennis Center as his backyard - it is no wonder that Stefan has become the player that he is. After serving as Novak Djokovic's hitting partner at the U.S. Open (actually his ball-boy), Stefan has learned the value of hard work and tenacity. His opponents often come off the court and comment that the guy never misses. In fact - playing against Stefan is like playing against a Stone Wall!! Stefan majors in biology and in about twelve years from now he'll be saving lives (maybe even mine!).
This spring - please come out to support Prerana, Stefan, and all of your Seawolves! How many of you can believe that we will be hosting our 6th Annual Seawolves Tennis Family FunFest in the spring? The first person to tell me will get a free Seawolves Tennis t-shirt. Please mark your calendars for Saturday March 24, 2012. We don't want to have a conflict with our basketball team as they are destined to win the America East Conference championship this season, and we certainly don't want to step on St Patrick's toes. So we'll go a little later in March and it will give each of you more time to make your plans. Once again the FunFest will take place at Eastern Athletic Club in Blue Point.
If you do believe that this is going to be our 6th Annual Seawolves FunFest event, but still want some tennis gear for yourself or that special someone - simply emaiI me with your size and address. We will mail you a Stony Brook Tennis shirt, hoodie, pants, hat, visor, etc...
All we ask is that you make a donation of your choice to the Tennis Fund For Excellence.
Seeing that it's better to give than receive - this is a perfect gift opportunity for that Seawolves fan in your life.
If you know of any teammates/supporters that would like to receive the Coach's Corner - please feel free to send me their email address.
Take care and I look forward to seeing you on the other side of the net!
Have a Happy Thanksgiving!
Get your RED on . . . It's What WE do!
