Coach's Corner - A Note From the Desk of Coach Glassman

Head Coach Gary Glassman

Feb. 22, 2012

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Greetings and welcome to the winter edition of the 2012 season Coach's Corner - a newsletter to keep you informed and up to date on Stony Brook Tennis!

The season got started for us in a hurry as it always does. After a week and a half of indoor practice - we headed up north to take on Dartmouth and Southern New Hampshire. The men and women both fell to tough Dartmouth squads, but took care of Southern New Hampshire. Nikita Fomin'14 highlighted the weekend as he toppled the 65th ranked player in the country from Dartmouth in the #1 spot.

The following weekend saw the Seawolves head to West Point to tackle Army and UConn. In similar fashion to the opening weekend - both squads dropped identical 4-3 heartbreakers to Army and rebounded to defeat Big East opponent UConn. This time the America East conference recognized Nikita's efforts and rewarded him with Player of the Week honors.

Next up is a ride along I-78 as we face Lehigh on Friday February 24. The women will open conference play on Saturday as they stay in Bethlehem, PA to face Albany. If you're in the area - please come on out and support the Seawolves. If you're not in the area - rent an RV and load it up with lots of Stony Brook fans and come to the courts to support the Seawolves.

Now it's time for Seawolves Profiles as we take a closer look at a junior and a senior

Nini Lagvilava is a junior from Tbilisi, Georgia and majors in Arts and Sciences. She is a Machine on the court and as of this writing Nini is on pace to graduate as the most decorated player in women's tennis history. She has already achieved many firsts - including: the highest ever Northeast Region ranking, first nationally ranked player, reached the quarterfinals of the ITA Regional Championships, and was named America East Rookie of the Year. Most people are not very familiar with her home country of Georgia. So when they ask where she originally hails from - she usually says "Atlanta".

Roope "Sniper" Kailaheimo is a senior from Helsinki, Finland and will graduate in May with a Political Science degree and recently found out he was accepted to the prestigious London School of Economics. In addition to being a co-captain and team leader, Roope has been a consistent performer in the top 3 of the line-up. Not only that - he leads the rugby-like chant before every match and the guys are virtually apoplectic when it's time for doubles. When Roope becomes the Secretary-General of the United Nations - it will certainly be interesting to see if he starts the daily proceedings in the same fashion!

This spring - please come out to support Nini, Roope and all of your Seawolves!

We're only a month away from our 6th Annual Seawolves Tennis Family FunFest. The invitations have been sent and hopefully yours has arrived. If not - here is the link for your convenience.

Please register early to lock in the savings (and to allow me to make an accurate food order). I probably say this every year, but this year is going to be the biggest and best event ever. So don't wait until next year to experience such a great evening of tennis, food, prizes, and fellowship. Once again the FunFest will take place at Eastern Athletic Club in Blue Point and I hope to see you there.

If you aren't able to make it to the FunFest but would still like some tennis gear for yourself or that special someone - simply emaiI me with your size and address. We will mail you a Stony Brook Tennis shirt, hoodie, pants, hat, visor, etc...

All we ask is that you make a donation of your choice to Tennis Fund for Excellence - Click here to make a donation.

Seeing that it's better to give than receive - this is a perfect gift opportunity for that Seawolves fan in your life.

If you know of any teammates/supporters that would like to receive the Coach's Corner - please feel free to send me their email address.

Take care and I look forward to seeing you on the other side of the net!
