Women's tennis beats Connecticut, falls short against Army

The Stony Brook women's tennis opened the 2014 spring season with a 4-2 victory over Connecticut Friday at the Lichtenberg Tennis Center.
The Seawolves fell to the Black Knights, 4-3, despite singles wins at No. 2, 5 and 6.
In a singles-only match, each of the wins against Connecticut came in straight sets. Junior Polina Movchan (Kiev, Ukraine) beat Srna Stosljevic, 7-6 (7-3), 6-1 at No. 1 singles. Freshman Adey Osabuohien (Hazel Crest, Ill.) topped Maxie Weinberg, 6-4, 6-3 at No. 3 singles.
At No. 1 doubles against Army, Movchan and freshman Nadia Smergut (New York, N.Y.) won 6-3 in Stony Brook's only doubles victory of the opening weekend.
Osabuohien and Shtilkind won at No. 3 and No. 5 singles, respectively, and junior Cassandra Dix (Northamptonshire, U.K.) claimed a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 6, but Army pulled out the 4-3 victory. Stony Brook will head to Rhode Island next weekend for matches against URI and Brown.
