May 3, 2013
Stony Brook, N.Y. - The Stony Brook softball team will close out the regular season this weekend when it hosts Boston University for a three-game series starting Saturday at 1 p.m. Winners of three straight, the playoff-bound Seawolves will be looking to end the regular season on a high note before next week's America East Tournament.
The 2013 America East Championship field is set and will feature Albany, Binghamton, Hartford and Stony Brook. The tournament will be played at Binghamton regardless of where the Bearcats finish in the standings as Albany has waived its right to host the championship.
Stony Brook can finish as high as third in the standings and will face either Albany or Binghamton in the first game. The tournament will be a double elimination format, meaning that a team must be beaten twice to be eliminated.
The Seawolves enter with a 28-22 overall record after posting a 3-0 mark against Seton Hall and Iona this week. Sophomore Bria Green (Wheatley Heights, N.Y.) leads the conference with 17 doubles and leads the team with a .347 average. Junior Christine Lucido (Melville, N.Y.) paces the squad with a 1.90 ERA and an 11-2 record.
The Terriers enter their final weekend as an America East member with a 21-23-1 overall record. Boston University owns an 8-6 mark in conference play and currently sits third in the standings, despite being ineligible for postseason play. Jayme Mask leads the offense with a .390 average, 55 hits, 29 runs and 35 stolen bases. In the circle, Whitney Tuthill (13-12) boasts a 2.44 ERA and 125 strikeouts in 166.2 innings.
Sunday's regular season finale will also be senior day for Gina Bianculli (Oakdale, N.Y.). Bianculli has started all 50 games this year and is third on the team with three homers to go along with 17 RBI.
