Softball entertains UMBC this weekend

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Looking to build off a pair of mid-week victories, the Stony Brook softball team will welcome conference rival UMBC to University Field for a three-game series this weekend. The teams will play a doubleheader Saturday starting at 1 p.m., before wrapping up the series Sunday at 11 a.m.

Coming off a walk-off win over Fairfield on Thursday, Stony Brook (14-15, 1-2 AE) will look to ascend the America East standings with a series win this weekend. The Seawolves rank second in the conference with a 3.61 team ERA and have given up two runs or less in 10 of their last 11 games. Stony Brook also ranks second in the America East in fielding percentage at .973, which is also good for the 28th-best mark in the nation.


The Retrievers (8-22) also sit at 1-2 in the America East standings after dropping a series against Maine last weekend. UMBC leads the America East with a .293 team batting average, but also ranks last in team ERA at 5.47, having allowed 10 runs or more in 11 games this season. Taylor Hall is the team’s leader at the plate with an impressive .402 average to go along with six homers and 34 RBI. In the circle, Heather Brown paces the squad with a 3.39 ERA and a 5-8 record in 76.1 innings pitched.
