Giosia, Lucido garner America East weekly awards
Feb. 25, 2013
Cambridge, Mass. - Two members of the Stony Brook softball team were honored by the America East on Monday as sophomore Shayla Giosia (Runnemede, N.J.) was named the conference's Player of the Week, while junior Christine Lucido (Melville, N.Y.) earned Pitcher of the Week laurels.
Giosia smacked her second-career grand slam on Saturday against Bucknell as the Seawolves (4-6) pounded the Bison, 13-2, in Farmville, Va. The sophomore finished the game 2-for-5 with a career-high five RBI and rounded out the weekend with a .333 average (5-for-15) with three runs, a .533 slugging percentage and a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage.
Lucido posted a 2-0 record at the Longwood Spring Classic with a 2.00 ERA in seven innings. The junior tossed five efficient innings against Longwood on Saturday, holding the Lancers to two runs on five hits as Stony Brook handed Longwood its only loss of the season so far. Lucido then pitched two scoreless innings in relief on Sunday against Bucknell and earned a second win as the Seawolves prevailed, 4-3, in eight innings. For the weekend, Lucido held opponents to a .208 average and allowed one extra-base hit.
This is the first America East weekly award for Lucido, who is off to a 3-0 start in 2013 after registering a 5-3 record a season ago. Giosia earned America East Rookie of the Week honors three times as a freshman last year en route to a second-team All-Conference nomination.
Stony Brook will be back in action this weekend at the NC State Wolfpack Challenge in Raleigh, N.C.
