Walk-Off Single From Chain Gives Softball 1-0 Victory Over Kennesaw State
March 14, 2010
Clearwater, Fla. - Freshman Taylor Chain's (Gloucester, N.J.) first career RBI was a timely one as her bases loaded single in the bottom of the seventh inning gave Stony Brook's softball team a 1-0 victory over Kennesaw State on Sunday afternoon at the Under Armour Showcase. Senior Alyssa Struzenberg (Cooper City, Fla.) got the win for SBU, throwing her second shutout of the season. The Seawolves are now 5-7 on the season.
While Stony Brook didn't have a baserunner until the fifth inning, Kennesaw State threatened early as a double and a walk put runners on second and third with two out in the third. Struzenberg picked up one of her ten strikeouts on the day, however, to keep the game knotted at 0-0.
KSU had two runners on again in the fourth, but Struzenberg buckled down, recording a strikeout and a fly out to end the threat. Struzenberg would strand nine runners on base while allowing just one hit in 16 at-bats with runners on base.
Stony Brook's first scoring opportunity came in the bottom of the fifth with two on and one out. A sacrifice fly to right by senior Jade Clare (Federal Way, Wash.) would move the runners to second and third, but Jessica Cross picked up one of her three strikeouts as she kept the Seawolves off the board.
With one out in the bottom of the seventh, seniors Casey Jacobs (Davie, Fla.) and Katelyn O'Donnell (Kingston, Mass.) hit back-to-back singles. A walk by Clare would then load the bases. Chain then came through with a pinch-hit single to right centerfield, scoring Jacobs and giving the Seawolves the victory.
Stony Brook will host its first home game of the season this weekend. The Seawolves will host their annual Stony Brook Invitational, running from Friday through Sunday. SBU will play Yale and Quinnipiac on Friday, Holy Cross on Saturday and then Fairfield on Sunday. The first game is scheduled to start at 11:00 a.m.
