Women's soccer takes on Army, Yale this weekend
Aug. 30, 2012
Stony Brook, N.Y. - The Stony Brook women's soccer team will look to extend its three-game unbeaten streak this weekend with a pair of matchups against Army and Yale. The Seawolves will travel to West Point, N.Y. on Friday for a 5 p.m. contest against the Black Knights, before hosting Yale on Sunday at 2 p.m.
After a 3-2 defeat to Rhode Island in the season opener, the Seawolves have gone 2-0-1 with victories over Wagner and St. John's. The impetus behind Stony Brook's recent success has been the play of its freshman class, which has accounted for five of the team's nine goals this year. Freshman Priscilla Wiggins (Princeton, N.J.) has made the most of her playing time, netting a pair of late first-half goals against Wagner and St. John's to tie for the team lead in scoring.
Junior Caitlin Pfeiffer (Holland, N.Y.) has also been a vital contributor, chipping in an assist against Temple and the game-winning goal at St. John's last weekend. The tally helped Pfeiffer earn America East Player of the Week honors on Monday.
The defending Patriot League champions, Army is off to a 2-2-0 start with wins over Vermont and Texas State and losses to Providence and UTEP. Friday's matchup will be Army's regular-season home opener after spending the first two weeks of the season on the road. Joey Molacek is off to a flying start for the Black Knights with three goals and one assist to lead the team.
The Bulldogs have yet to play a match this season, but will open against a pair of America East foes this weekend. On Friday, Yale will travel north to face in-state rival Hartford, before crossing the Long Island sound on Sunday to face Stony Brook. The Bulldogs return all but one starter from last year's team that posted a 9-5-3 record.
