A single goal separated UMBC and Stony Brook in 2013 as the Retrievers upended the #Seawolves 2-1 in a tightly-contested America East final. Now, to start the 2014 season, the two schools are separated by a single vote.

UMBC sits atop the America East women's soccer preseason coaches' poll, released by the conference office Wednesday, with 59 votes followed closely by Stony Brook with 58. Maine (49) and Hartford (47), the other two semifinalists from the conference tournament a year ago, rounded out the top four. The voting was conducted by the conference's nine head coaches, who were not permitted to vote for their own teams.

Last season, Stony Brook earned a share of their first ever America East regular season championship by posting an 11-6-2 overall record and 6-2 mark within the conference. The Seawolves return 18 letterwinners and seven starters from a year ago, including America East Goalkeeper of the Year Ashley Castanio. They open the season at Rutgers on Aug. 22 at 7 pm.
