April 8, 2013
Cambridge, Mass. - Michelle Rubino of the No. 12/11 Stony Brook women's lacrosse team has been recognized as the America East Defensive Player of the Week, conference officials announced Monday.
The midfielder, who hails from East Setauket, N.Y., recorded game-highs in ground balls and caused turnovers with four and three, respectively, to help Stony Brook (11-2, 3-0 AE) best UMBC, 15-9, Saturday evening in Baltimore. Rubino also tallied three points on two goals and one assist and controlled two draws.
The win marked the first time the Seawolves have ever claimed victory on the road against the Retrievers and the 12th time they have held an opponent to single-digits in scoring this year.
Rubino paces the team in ground balls with 29 and is second in draw controls with 42. Only a sophomore, she already ranks fourth all-time at SBU in career draw controls with 136 and is eight shy of matching Amy Taylor for third on the ledger. Kaitlin Leggio, who controlled 192 draws from 2006-09, is first all-time in school history.
SBU is in sole possession of first-place in the America East standings with three games to play and has won a conference award in six of eight weeks this season. The Seawolves lead the league with eight total nods.
