Cook named America East Offensive Player of the Week
March 25, 2013
Cambridge, Mass. – Demmianne Cook has been selected as the America East Offensive Player of the Week following an 18-goal performance that propelled the No. 15/13 Stony Brook women’s lacrosse team to three straight wins last week, including back-to-back road victories.
Cook led the conference with six goals per game on a .692 shooting percentage. A dynamic player on both ends of the field, she averaged 1.67 caused turnovers and 1.67 ground balls.
The Nesconset, N.Y., native opened the week strong, netting seven goals, tied for the second-most all-time by a Seawolf in a single contest, in a 21-3 home win against Iona Wednesday. She also dominated the draw circle, racking up eight draw controls, which ranks eighth in SBU single-game history, while also finishing with two caused turnovers and two ground balls.
In the Seawolves’ first America East game of the season at Vermont Saturday, Cook recorded five goals as Stony Brook posted a 19-5 victory to move to 2-0 in conference openers under head coach Joe Spallina.
Cook, a senior captain, poured in six goals at Siena Sunday, including a string of three-straight tallies in less than 90 seconds that gave SBU a commanding 10-2 lead with 7:57 remaining in the opening frame. She went 3-for-3 on free position shots and paced Stony Brook with five controlled draws to lead the Seawolves to an 18-5 win.
Cook has a team-best 47 goals this season, which is tied with Janine Hillier (2012) and Amy Taylor (2006) for second on Stony Brook’s all-time single-season goal ledger. She set the record of 68 goals last season. Cook, a Tewaarton contender, passed Melissa Cook, who suited up SB from 2008-11 and netted 112 goals, for fourth in career goals (115) and is one of only five Seawolves to reach the 100-goal plateau. She also topped Samantha Dhaja for fifth at SBU in career draw controls (104). Dhaja controlled 100 draws from 2008-11.
This marks the fourth time in the first six weeks of the season Stony Brook has picked up at least one America East weekly award. The Seawolves have earned five weekly honors, which matches Albany for the conference lead.
SBU, ranked at an all-time high 13th in the deBeer Media Poll, will host Fresno State in its final nonconference game of the season before gearing up for Albany Saturday, March 30 at 1 p.m. at LaValle Stadium.
