Caridi, Murphy pick up first America East weekly honors
Feb. 18, 2014
Cambridge, Mass. - After turning in a pair of historic performances, senior goalie Frankie Caridi and freshman attacker Courtney Murphy of the No. 12/14 Stony Brook women's lacrosse team have been named America East Defensive Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week, respectively, conference officials announced Tuesday morning. The duo helped the #Seawolves trounce Bucknell, 18-1, Saturday.
Caridi, one of the nation's best and most celebrated netminders, made nine saves and posted a save percentage of .900. The 2014 ILWomen Preseason All-American anchored a defensive unit that allowed the fewest goals in Stony Brook single-game history (1). Caridi, who hails from East Northport, N.Y., is coming off a season that saw her boast the best save percentage (.530) and goals-against average (5.71) in Division I. No stranger to weekly awards, Caridi nabbed a league-leading four Defensive Player of the Week awards in 2013.
Murphy wasted no time putting herself in the Seawolves record books. The Shirley, N.Y., native led the conference with seven goals and eight points, shattering the previous school records for a freshman debut of three goals and five points. Her seven goals tied a trio of all-time greats in Demmianne Cook, Claire Petersen and Kaitlin Leggio for second on Stony Brook's single-game ledger. Murphy, who added one caused turnover and one ground ball to her sensational stat line, was named WomensLax.com National Rookie of the Week Monday.
The Seawolves will play host to Monmouth Wednesday at 1 p.m. at LaValle Stadium.
