Women's lacrosse nationally ranked in both major preseason polls
Feb. 5, 2013
Stony Brook, N.Y. - Hours after being selected as the preseason favorite to win the America East, the Stony Brook women's lacrosse team came in at No. 18 in the IWLCA preseason poll. SBU was ranked No. 19 in the deBeer Media Poll released last week.
This marks the first time in school history that the Seawolves have earned a preseason national ranking.
Stony Brook is the lone America East team ranked in either poll, though Albany received votes in both. The Seawolves cracked the national rankings for the first time in program history last year the week after defeating No. 20/17 Johns Hopkins to notch the program's first-ever win against a nationally ranked opponent.
SBU returns 20 letterwinners and all 12 starters from last year's team that capped off the largest turnaround in school history with a trip to the conference title game, where it fell to Albany, 9-7, in a close matchup. Stony Brook won four games in 2011 but righted the ship and gained national prominence with a program-record 14-win season in 2012.
Stony Brook was honored with a slew of postseason awards, including IWLCA All-America and America East Player of the Year honors for Claire Petersen and America East Coach of the Year accolades for head coach Joe Spallina. Demmianne Cook, Janine Hiller, Michelle Rubino, Frankie Caridi and Melissa Rotante joined Petersen in garnering all-conference recognition and will all return for the 2013 season.
Stony Brook kicks off its 2013 slate Feb. 16 at Bucknell and returns home March 9 to take on Longwood at 1 p.m. at LaValle Stadidum.. To view the entire schedule, click here.
