March 13, 2014
Stony Brook, N.Y. -Freshmen accounted for 16 of the No. 18/19 Stony Brook women's lacrosse team's 20 goals in a dominating 20-5 win over Central Connecticut Thursday night at LaValle Stadium. Freshman attacker Courtney Murphy netted eight goals, the second-most in #Seawolves single-game history.
Freshman attacker Alyssa Guido tallied six points on three goals and three helpers, and midfielders Dorrien Van Dyke (4 goals, 1 assist) and Kristin Yevoli (1 goal, 4 assists) finished with five points apiece for Stony Brook (5-2). Van Dyke led the way in the circle with four draw controls.
Junior midfielder Michelle Rubino tallied one goal, four assists and four ground balls.
Morgan Tullar stopped 10 shots for Central Connecticut (2-3).
"We're growing up offensively and spreading the ball around well. We had a lot of assisted goals tonight from several different people. The biggest thing for us is playing quality defense and turning defense into offense, which is something we've done a good job of doing throughout my time here."
--Head Coach Joe Spallina
Guido opened the scoring at 26:17 of the first half with an unassisted tally and dished to Kupres about two minutes later to give Stony Brook an early 2-0 lead. Emily Mercier wove through traffic and stashed one away with 23:54 on the clock, and Murphy netted back-to-back goals for a 5-0 advantage at the 21:11 mark.
Rubino fed Guido and Murphy for scores as the lead ballooned to 7-0 before CCSU got on the board on a Meagan McCurry free position shot with 16:59 until intermission. The Seawolves closed the half on a 7-1 run, taking a 14-2 lead 17 seconds before halftime when Yevoli found Murphy cutting towards the cage.
