Stony Brook, N.Y. - Senior Sam Landers (Springfield, Va.) has been named the captain of the Stony Brook women's basketball team, head coach Beth O'Boyle announced Thursday.

"Sam is a proven leader who will help lead the program on and off the court," O'Boyle said. "She graduated in three years, Summa Cum Laude, and is now working toward her master's degree. She's just a tremendous student-athlete."

Stony Brook's active career leading scorer with 530 points, Landers has appeared in every game over the past three years (90), while making 43 starts. Last year, Landers led the team with a 91.2% clip at the free-throw line and ranks fourth all-time at Stony Brook with a .756 career free-throw percentage.

Landers and the Seawolves open the 2012-13 season Friday against Rider at Pritchard Gym at 7 p.m.
