Jan. 30, 2014
Stony Brook, N.Y. – Senior guard Chikilra Goodman of the Stony Brook women’s basketball team has been placed on the Dawn Staley Award Watch List, the Phoenix Club of Philadelphia has announced.
The Dawn Staley Award was established in 2013 to honor the best guard in Division I women’s college basketball. The accolade is given annually to a player who exemplifies the skills that the legendary guard Staley possessed throughout her career, including ball handling, scoring, distributing the basketball and a will to win.
“Chikilra is having a tremendous year for us,” Stony Brook women’s baseketball head coach Beth O’Boyle said. “She is an incredible player with the ability to rebound at a high level in addition to being able to finish at the rim. Having such a relentless competitor on our team has truly helped elevate our program.
Goodman sits atop the conference rankings and is 31st nationally in steals per game (2.7). The Philadelphia, Pa., product leads the Seawolves in assists at 3.6 per contest and is their second leading scorer and rebounder at 12.1 points and 7.2 rebounds per game. She ranks in the conference’s top 10 in scoring, rebounding and assists and was named America East Player of the Week Monday for scoring in double figures in all three of Stony Brook’s wins last week.
The athletic guard has helped lead the resurgence of Stony Brook women’s basketball, which holds its best record through 20 games in Division I program history (15-5) and is off to its fastest start to conference action (6-1) since 2006-07.
The winner will be announced during Final Four weekend at a ceremony at the Union League of Philadelphia.
