Stony Brook University's Department of Athletics held its annual Laxbacker Dinner on Saturday night at the Meadow Club in Port Jefferson Station. The ninth annual event was a tremendous success with more than 200 people coming out to support Stony Brook's men's and women's lacrosse teams.
In addition to both teams, both coaching staffs and Stony Brook Director of Athletics Jim Fiore, the crowd was full of Stony Brook lacrosse alumni, parents and supporters of both programs. Head men's coach Rick Sowell and head women's coach Allison Comito both spoke at the event, giving Seawolves lacrosse fans a preview of the upcoming 2010 seasons. Senior midfielder Steven Waldeck (Levittown, N.Y.) and senior midfielder Bridgid Callahan (Hanover, Md.) also spoke at the dinner, recounting their experiences as student-athletes at Stony Brook.
Lacrosse Unlimited's Brendan Fleming also spoke and announced that the company and Stony Brook's Department of Athletics will again partner for the third annual "Lacrosse For Autism" event at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium on May 1. The Seawolves face Vermont at 7 p.m. preceded by Long Island High School powers Northport and Ward Melville at 4 p.m.
Stony Brook will also be hosting the 2010 NCAA Men's Lacrosse North Quarterfinals on May 23. Individual tickets go on sale February 22.
The annual Laxbacker dinner has helped to raise significant funds during the past eight years to support scholarships and additional operating costs for the Stony Brook lacrosse programs as well as provide an opportunity to kick off the upcoming lacrosse season and to recognize current and former Stony Brook athletes and coaches.
