2008 Coach's Corner #1 - A Note From Coach Glassman
Sept. 19, 2008
Stony Brook, N.Y. - This is the first fall edition of the Coach's Corner, a monthly newsletter to keep you informed and up-to-date on Stony Brook Tennis! It's a new season and both teams are looking very strong coming into the start of the school year.
The men kicked off the 2008-2009 season this weekend at the Cornell Invitational with some impressive results. Our top performer was sophomore Ivan Rummel '11 (Budapest, Hungary) who took the singles championship for Flight A which included wins over players from Cornell, UMBC and St. Bonaventure. He was also named Stony Brook Athlete of the Week for his efforts. We also had good showings from junior Ilan Shvartz `10 (Haifa, Israel) who reached the finals of the Flight A Consolations and our two newcomers Halvar Dil `10 (Amersfoort, Netherlands) won Flight B Consolations and Mitch Wong `12 (Tampa, FL) made it the semi's of Flight B before losing to the eventual champion. Though these are all impressive results the main highlight of the weekend was how well our team competed and supported each other through every match.
The women's squad experienced more change over this off-season than any in recent memory. We have four new freshmen; Emily Gevins '12 (Suffern,N.Y.), Katherine Hanson '12 (Smithtown, N.Y.), Salome Mkervalidze '12 (Brewster, N.Y.), Anna Pieschl '12 (Gothenburg, Sweden) and one sophomore transfer Gayatri Krishnan `11 (Chennai, India) that will all be making an immediate impact on our team. This wave of youth is very exciting but also challenging, and this is why we will rely so heavily on the leadership of our three returnees, Paola Rodolfi '10 (Asuncion, Paraguay), Erica Federgreen '09 (Scottsdale, A.Z.) and Fanny Charliquart '11 (Gueugnon, France). Their leadership will be a huge factor in helping the freshmen understand what it means to be a Stony Brook tennis player. With the leadership and experience of our upperclassmen we are expecting a huge impact from this freshman class that will hopefully lead us to the top of the America East.
This weekend (September 19-21) it will be the women's turn to show what they can do when we host the Second Annual Stony Brook Classic Women's Tournament. All four teams from last year (Army, LIU, Southern Mississippi and University of Alabama at Birmingham) are back this year and we have added three new teams to the draw which are Auburn, Toledo and Marist. This is a great chance to come out and see the Seawolves as we take on some great teams from around the country. The schedule will be as follows and I hope all of you have the opportunity to make it out.
Friday - Doubles starting at 1:00 p.m.
The next chance you can see both the men's and women's team in action will be on Saturday October 4, 2008 when we host New Jersey Tech and St. Peters in the Stony Brook 3-Way starting at 9:00AM. We hope you get the chance to come out and support Seawolves Tennis!
As a reminder, Homecoming is on Saturday October 18th as the football team hosts Charleston Southern. We hope you will join in the festivities and visit the Athletics Department Reunion Tent to reunite with former teammates. If you plan to attend homecoming, be sure to register early by visiting the university website at www.stonybrook.edu and click on the Wolfstock 2008 button.
Take care and we'll see you on the other side of the net!
