West Point, N.Y. - The Stony Brook swimming and diving team will open the 2011-12 season on Friday with a quad-meet against Army, Boston College and Vermont (women only) in West Point, N.Y. Diving events are scheduled for 4 p.m., with the first swimming events slated for 5 p.m.

The men's team returns 13 letterwinners led by captains Sean Conway (Oakdale, N.Y.) and Hajime Ichikawa (Scarsdale, N.Y.). Conway is coming off a strong season in which he helped the 400 freestyle relay team tie a school record with a time of 3:03.95 at the America East Championship meet. Individually, Conway placed ninth in the 100 freestyle at the conference championship. Ichikawa also registered a top-10 finish at the America East Championship with a ninth-place finish in the 200 breaststroke.

The women's squad brings back 26 competitors from last year, including captains Darcy Heuser (Centerville, Ohio) and Deirdre Leong (Forest Hills, N.Y.). Heuser finished the 2010-11 season on a high note with a pair of sixth-place finishes in the 100 free and 50 free at the America East Championship. Leong will look to be one of the team's top backstroke specialists this year and contribute in the medley and free relays.

The Seawolves will welcome 17 newcomers to the squad this season, with 11 new faces joining the men's team and six joining the women's team. A pair of junior college transfers, Jodie Darnell (Rocklin, Calif.) and Molly Swartz (Grass Valley, Calif.) will bolster the team on the diving boards, while freshman Elizabeth Beckett (Swindon, England) looks to make an immediate splash in the pool. On the men's side, 10 freshmen will look to contribute in addition to one sophomore, Thomas Theophilidis (Plainview, N.Y.), a sophomore transfer from Manhattan College.
