Swimming and diving competes in Puerto Rico during break

Mayaguez, Puerto Rico - The Stony Brook swimming and diving teams competed against three opponents over intersession break in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico last week. The men's squad defeated Wheaton College and Puerto Rico Mayaguez, but fell to Columbia, while the women swept Wheaton and Puerto Rico Mayaguez.

Four Stony Brook women's swimmers took first place in individual events. Senior Stephanie Gross (Fairport, N.Y.) took the top time in the 50 butterfly with a mark of 31.28, while classmate Darcy Heuser (Centerville, Ohio) posted a first-place finish in the 100 free (1:01.69). In the 50 free, sophomore Allison Zelnick (Troy, Ohio) earned first with a time of 27.89, while junior Christie Bodden (Panama City, Panama) topped the field in the 50 backstroke (33.35).

On the men's side, senior Sean Conway (Oakdale, N.Y.) was Stony Brook's top finisher (second place overall) in the 100 free with a time of 54.96.

Stony Brook returns to the pool on Jan. 18 at Lafayette at 2 p.m.
