Storrs, Conn. -
The #Seawolves will bid for their first win over a nationally ranked opponent since they defeated no. 19 Vermont in 2005 when they travel to Storrs, Conn. to face the no. 8 UConn Huskies on Monday at 7 p.m.

Scouting UConn

The Huskies may be as talented as any group in the country. This was made evident in the preseason when two of their members, Adria Beso Marco and Cyle Larin were placed on the the preseason Hermann Watch List, the award given to the nation's best player. Top Drawer Soccer ranked three Huskies in their preseason top 100 players list. Larin was ranked the eighth best players in the country, Beso Marco the 20th, and defender Serge Campbell the 27th. Additionally, Beso Marco and Larin were named to the College Soccer News and Soccer America preseason first team All-American teams.

The Huskies success in last year's NCAA Tournament propels them into 2014 with momentum. UConn advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals after knocking off the top-seeded UCLA Bruins earlier in the tournament. They return seven key players from the team that finished 12-3-8. Beso Marco earned All-American honors after finishing the season with an astounding 10 assists. He was also voted the American Athletic Conference Midfielder of the Year. Campbell was tabbed as the AAC preseason Defensive Player of the Year after earning all-conference honors a year ago. Larin scored 14 goals as a freshman en route to freshman All-American honors. He is joined up top by another AAC all-conference player, Allando Matheson. The senior enters 2014 with 18 career goals. Despite all the accolades, 2014 hasn't opened how the Huskies hoped. They fell to no. 17 Coastal Carolina in their season opener 3-2 despite opening up a 2-0 lead. Larin scored a goal and the other was gifted via an own goal.

This won't be the first time the #Seaolves take on a Husky team ranked in the top 10 in the nation. The two schools last met in 2008. The Seawolves almost pulled the upset over the third ranked Huskies but fell 1-0. Prior to that, the schools met in the NCAA Tournament second round back in 2005 with the no. 4 Huskies prevailing 2-0. UConn has won all three meetings between the schools.

Raucous Environment

The #Seawolves will have to be prepared to play in an electric environment. The Huskies averaged 3,610 fans per game last season and played in front of 4,385 in their season opener against Coastal Carolina.

Seawolves Notes
  • No.7 Charlotte was the last ranked opponent to take on Stony Brook back in 2012. The 49ers won the match 3-0.
  • Reshirt freshman goalkeeper Tom McMahon made five stops in his collegiate debut, a 1-0 loss to Central Connecticut.
  • Another redshirt freshman, Fernando Wadskier, paced the Seawolves with three shots against CCSU.
