The Stony Brook men’s soccer team was selected to finish fourth in the America East men’s soccer preseason coaches’ poll, the conference announced Tuesday. UMBC, the defending America East champion, was the unanimous favorite with 49 points followed by Hartford with 42.

The #Seawolves youth and inexperience came to the forefront a season ago when they stumbled to a 1-5-1 mark and seventh place finish in conference However, the Seawolves flashed plenty of promise and a glimpse of their future in the season’s early-going, managing a 5-5 record in their non-conference slate. The coaches around the conference seemed to take notice of the group’s budding potential, predicting the Seawolves to finish in the top half of the league for the fifth consecutive coaches’ poll.

Stony Brook returns 11 letterwinners and eight starters from a season ago. One of those returners is second team All-America East selection Martin Giordano, who led Stony Brook with 10 points on two goals and six assists. Returning players accounted for 13 of the Stony Brook 17 goals and 12 of the 13 assists in 2013 and all four starters from the back line return.

The Seawolves will open the season Friday, Aug. 29 at Central Connecticut.
