Campbell, Belton help Men's Lacrosse upset No. 18 Delaware, 7-6
March 10, 2012
Newark, Del. - Senior Robbie Campbell (Delta, British Columbia) tallied two goals and two assists and senior Kyle Belton (Langley, British Columbia) added two goals to lead the Stony Brook men's lacrosse team to a 7-6 win over No. 18 Delaware Saturday at Delaware Stadium.
Junior Jeff Tundo (Orchard Park, N.Y.) had a game-high three assists for the Seawolves (1-3), who picked up their first win of 2012.
Delaware's Grant Kaleikau, who led the Blue Hens (3-4) with 11 goals and 17 assists entering today's game, was held to two goals and an assist.
Both of Belton's goals came late in the second quarter as Stony Brook erased a two-goal deficit, 5-3.
Freshman Mike Andreassi's (Holbrook, N.Y.) goal at 14:04 of the third quarter allowed Stony Brook to regain a lead it never relinquished.
57 seconds into the fourth, sophomore Matt Bellando (Miami, Fla.) took Campbell's pass five yards from the top of the crease, scoring what proved to be the game-winner.
Kaleikau scored 23 seconds later, ending a scoring drought of nearly 19 minutes. But it was the only goal Delaware scored in the second half as Stony Brook won its sixth straight over the Blue Hens.
"We came into this game with the mindset of limiting man-up opportunities," coach Jim Nagle said. "If you foul only once, your time of possession goes up. I thought for the first time this year, the team came together for the first time."
Campbell and senior Russ Bonanno (Seaford, N.Y.) tallied man-up goals in the first quarter as Stony Brook led 3-1.
Delaware scored four straight goals to take a 5-3 lead, but Belton tallied back-to-back scores to make it a 5-5 game after one half.
Stony Brook will return home for two games next week, beginning with St. John's, which fell to Syracuse, 9-8 on Saturday, on Tuesday evening at 7.
