John Espey enters his 22nd year at Stony Brook including the last five as Assistant Director of Athletic Facilities.

No stranger to Stony Brook Athletics, Espey was Stony Brook's head lacrosse coach for 17 years, leading the school through its transition to Division I in 1990.

Espey compiled a 116-123 record at Stony Brook including a trip to the NCAA Tournament in 2002. During his tenure at Stony Brook, he led the Seawolves into the Top 25 in the country two times and recorded one of the best turnaround records in the nation in 1997.

During his time at Stony Brook, Espey upgraded the schedule to include the nation's elite teams including North Carolina, Princeton, Navy, Georgetown, Maryland and Duke.

Prior to his arrival at Stony Brook, Espey coached at Duke University for six years, twice leading the Blue Devils to a national ranking in the Top 20. Espey has also been the head coach of the North Hempstead Lacrosse Club and famed Chaminade High School. During his 20 plus years, Espey coached 75 All-Americans and World Team players.

Espey earned a bachelor's degree from Cortland in 1973 during which he was a two-time All-America selection as a midfielder. Espey played in two Final Fours including a spot in the National Championship game as a senior.

In 1976, Espey earned a master's degree in health and physical education from North Carolina while serving as a graduate assistant coach.

Currently, Espey serves as an assistant lacrosse coach at the United States Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point and with the Long Island Lizards of Major League Lacrosse.

Espey resides in Commack with his wife, Linda, and their three children, Michelle, Kimberly and John, a former lacrosse player at Cornell.
