Stony Brook, N.Y. - Freshman quarterback David Rodriguez (Long Branch HS/Long Branch, N.J.) was named Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week on Monday, the NEC announced.

Though Stony Brook fell to Central Connecticut State, 35-34, in an overtime thriller on Saturday, everyone was talking about Rodriguez in the game's aftermath. A threat both on the ground and in the air, the freshman signal caller accounted for 177 yards of total offense and three touchdowns. After replacing Brian Stanley in the second quarter, he led the Seawolves to touchdowns on four of their next five possessions.

He rushed for 101 yards on nine carries, including a 64-yard burst in the third quarter to set up his own three-yard scoring plunge. Rodriguez was an efficient 6-11 passing for 76 yards and two touchdowns. In overtime, his 12-yard strike to Chirs McGovern pulled Stony Brook within 35-34, before a two-point conversion to win failed.

The Seawolves (2-7) finish up the 2000 campaign at home against Robert Morris on Saturday. Kickoff is 12:30 p.m.
