Coach's Corner - A Letter From Coach Priore
Nov. 12, 2008
Stony Brook, N.Y. - There were many outstanding performances against Iona College, but the best way to recap last Saturday's result is to highlight the manner in which our team won the game. When it became obvious that we were the better team, I was extremely proud that our players exhibited a high level of class that embodies what our program and University is all about.
On Saturday, we put together a complete victory by controlling the ball with an overwhelming rushing game (school record 635 yards), an indication that we were not just the better team but that we went into the game with the right preparation and focus. We are now only a few days away from our season finale against Virginia Military institute. The VMI Keydets boast one of the top rushing attacks in the country, featuring an option offense that forces teams to change defensive schemes and philosophy for success.
Our goals for Saturday are fairly simple. Defensively, we will focus on assignment football as we need to be perfect against the option to ensure success. In addition to the x's and o's part of the game, our mental preparation will be equally important - we know they will gain yards but we must not allow the big play or extended scoring drives to give ourselves a great chance to win.
On offense, we will aim to control the ball and keep the VMI offense off the field. Over the last month, the strength of our running game has been on display and has been a key component to our improvement. If we stick to our principles, keep mistakes to a minimum and capitalize on our opportunities we will be in a position to win the game. Special teams, as in most games, will also play a key role as we aim to extend the field for the VMI offense all afternoon long.
As we get ready for Saturday, we are excited about the opportunity to send out our 20 seniors with a victory and a second place finish in our first year as a member of the Big South Conference. I would personally like to extend my thanks to our team, staff, alumni, administration and fans for their unyielding support this season. Most importantly, I would like to thank our senior class for their leadership in helping us overcome the adversity that we faced this season and the effort and work they put into SBU football during their time in our program. Their commitment and dedication during difficult times will serve them well for many years to come and we are proud of all that they have and will continue to accomplish.
Saturday's game will be televised live on MASN, a regional network in the Baltimore/Washington D.C./Northern Virginia area at 3:30 p.m. If you cannot make it to the game, you can listen on WUSB 90.1 FM or on the web at www.GoSeawolves.org. We hope to see you Saturday. Remember, Wear RED and Go Seawolves!
