2009 Coach's Corner #10 - A Letter From The Desk Of Coach Priore

Nov. 4, 2009

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Saturday's game at Gardner-Webb was an exciting victory for our Stony Brook football program. The win moved our record to 4-0 in Big South Conference standings with two games to play and allows us to control our own destiny towards a conference championship.

Our game on Saturday was one where we had to fight through a first half in which we did not play well in all aspects of the game. We trailed by seven points at the half. Our team reacted well to our half time adjustments and came out flying in the third quarter. Our guys came out in the second half hungry and highly motivated to "right the ship".

The adjustments on both sides of the ball worked immediately, we created turnovers, we put together a couple of scoring drives and we made defensive stops when we needed them; we controlled the second half of the game. As rain started to come down in the fourth quarter we were able to run the football 11 straight times for positive yards and then hit a touchdown pass from Michael Coulter '12 to Jordan Gush '13. It was a crucial football drive that used over seven minutes on the clock and gave us the clinching score.

Overall, I am pleased with our performance, especially the way we were able to make smart plays when we needed them. Our players and coaches all did a great job against a team that had not lost to an FCS opponent all season. Gardner Webb is a talented, well coached team. They will not lose many games the rest of the season in our conference. Our student-athletes deserve credit for a hard fought road win. We've played six of nine games on the road and we are learning what it takes to win tight games away from home.....the sign of a good program,

We are entering a much needed bye week. We will put it to positive use in a number of ways. The extra time off will give our players a chance to get some extra work in academically as they prepare for the last few weeks of the semester. It also gives us a chance to take care of some of those nagging injuries we have and give some of our players a little more time to heal. It also allows us a few more days to prepare for our next opponent, Charleston Southern University. We will take a few days off on the front and back end of the week and start working on our preparation for CSU mid-week.

The bye week allows us to step up our recruiting efforts. Our staff is out seeing recruits. The time off enables us to get a lot of our staff out across the country to see and evaluate talent that will become our next recruiting class of Seawolves at Stony Brook University. The bye week can be a huge bonus for any football program if it is used correctly. We are certainly going to use it to our advantage as we prepare for our final two games of the season.

I hope to see you all at LaValle Stadium on Saturday, November 21st when we take on nationally ranked Liberty University. Thank you for your support and remember to "Get Your RED On". Go, Seawolves!
