Stony Brook, N.Y. - The Stony Brook University Department of Athletics will host the 6th Annual Raymond M. Downey Heroes Football Classic this Saturday. Come watch the Stony Brook Seawolves take on the Monmouth Hawks at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium while honoring the memory of Deputy Chief Raymond Downey. Firefighters, policemen and all emergency services personnel will receive FREE admission with ID as Stony Brook pays thanks to the heroes in our community. Kick-off for the Classic has been changed from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Chief Downey was the Chief of the Special Operations Command of the Fire Department of New York who died in the line of duty while helping others escape from the fire and collapse scene of the twin towers at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. During his 39-year career with the FDNY, Chief Downey received five individual awards of valor and 16 unit citations. Additionally, he was awarded the Administration Medal in 1995 for his efforts on the Bunker Gear Program and interim quartermaster system.

Chuck Downey, the son of Ray Downey, was a member of the Stony Brook football team from 1984-1987. He left the Stony Brook program with six school records and 15 NCAA records and is a member of the Stony Brook Athletics Hall of Fame. He was a three-time All-American, including a Kodak and AP First Team Selection in 1987.
