Stony Brook, N.Y. - Senior John Kinder (Inwood, N.Y.) has been named Stony Brook's starting quarterback, head coach Chuck Priore announced on Tuesday.

Kinder, a transfer from Syracuse, beat out redshirt junior Conor Bednarski (South Pasadena, Calif.) and redshirt sophomore Carlos Hernandez (Moreno Valley, Calif.) for the starting job.

"John's overall athleticism and ability to escape and make plays with his feet adds a different dimension to our offense," Priore said. "He's still learning the offense, but I think his skill set gives us the best chance to be a dynamic offense."

Stony Brook, which opens the 2014 season against Bryant on August 28, will feature a starting quarterback from the state of New York for the first time since Brian Stanley '01 (Baldwin, N.Y.) started 10 games in 2000.

Kinder will be the first starting quarterback from the Tri-State area since Josh Dudash '07 (Beachwood, N.J.) started three years for the Seawolves.

Next Thursday's game time is slated for a 7 p.m. start. For tickets, call (631) 632-WOLF or visit
