Jan. 19, 2001
Stony Brook, N.Y. - Stony Brook has named Mike McCarty as its new offensive coordinator, head football coach Sam Kornhauser announced. He assumes the position that was vacated by Joe Viadella who resigned earlier this month.
McCarty comes to Stony Brook with over 10 years of coaching experience at the Division I level. For the past two years, he has been the offensive coordinator at Nicholls State University where he was also the quarterbacks coach. Prior to NSU, he spent two seasons at Troy State as a wide receivers coach.
Coach Kornhauser is excited about adding McCarty to his coaching staff. "Mike is a great teacher and brings us a tremendous amount of successful Division I-AA experience," Kornhauser said. "He will be an excellent addition to our staff as we continue our ascent up the Division I-AA ladder."
McCarty began his coaching career at the University of Oregon in 1988 as a graduate assistant before moving on to Oregon Tech where he served as its offensive coordinator for one season. At Tech, his offense finished third in the NAIA in total offense and advanced to the national semifinals.
He then assumed the position of pass game coordinator at Southeast Missouri State from 1992-94 prior to taking over as offensive coordinator at Hofstra University. During his two years at Hofstra, his offense ranked in the Top 10 among all Division I-AA schools in total offense in each season.
McCarty is a native of Oregon City, Ore. and a 1988 graduate of Portland State University.
