Stony Brook to join CAA Football in 2013

A new era of Stony Brook Football in the premier FCS conference to begin in 2013.

Lyle Hemphill enters his fifth season with Stony Brook and his third as the defensive coordinator. Hemphill also will work with the safeties.

Hemphill has developed Stony Brook into one of the most proficient defensive units in FCS. In 2013, the Seawolves ranked 15th in total defense (325.4 ypg) and 18th in scoring defense (22.0 ppg) and in 2014 SBU ranked third in total defense (273.3 ypg) and fourth in scoring defense (15.3 ppg)

Under Hemphill's guidance, Cedrick Moore, Dominick Reyes, Davonte Anderson, Christian Ricard and Victor Ochi each earned all-conference honors. Anderson became the Seawolves' Division I career leader in interceptions and Ochi is poised to become the career sacks leader.

Hemphill was named Stony Brook's secondary coach on May 2, 2011. Hemphill spent 2010 on the staff at Delaware, which advanced to the NCAA Division I National Championship game. The Delaware native worked with the Blue Hens' cornerbacks, including Anthony Bratton, an All-CAA safety who led the conference's defensive backs with 99 tackles.

No stranger to Long Island, Hemphill coached at Hofstra from 2006-09. During his time with the Pride, he worked with defensive backs and cornerbacks as well as serving as special teams coordinator. Hofstra ranked fourth in the nation in pass defense in 2008 and ranked second in the league in interceptions with 12 in 2007.

Prior to Hofstra, Hemphill was a graduate assistant with the Blue Hens. He began his coaching career at Delaware Valley College, where he worked with the defensive backs and was the Aggies' special teams coordinator.

A 2002 graduate of Ursinus College in Pennsylvania, he was a four-year letterwinner at strong safety and wrestled one season for the Bears. After graduating from college, he was a volunteer assistant wrestling coach at his alma mater, St. Elizabeth High School in Wilmington. His father, Joe, is one of the most successful football coaches in Delaware high school history.

Hemphill and his wife, Christen, have two children,Izabella and Lyla. The family lives in Port Jefferson
