Stony Brook, N.Y. - Freshman Jameel Warney (Plainfield, N.J.) of the Stony Brook men's basketball team has been named America East Rookie of the Week after a strong weekend of averaging 13 points and nine rebounds, the conference office announced Monday.

Warney helped the Seawolves to a split of back-to-back games this past weekend. Playing games on consecutive days in the regular season for the first time since November 2001, the Seawolves defeated a previously unbeaten Canisius at home, 82-75, on Saturday and then took nationally ranked Connecticut to the wire on Sunday in a 73-62 loss.

The 6-8, 255-pound forward scored a career-high 18 points on 7-of-14 shooting and added seven rebounds in the win over Canisius. He then had eight points, a career-high 11 rebounds and two blocks at UConn.

Six games into his collegiate career, Warney is shooting 56% from the field and averaging 10.7 points, 7.7 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game.

Warney and the Seawolves travel to Cornell Wednesday for a 7 p.m. tilt. Then the team is back at home Saturday to take on Eastern Illinois at Pritchard Gymnasium at 2 p.m. For tickets to Saturday's game, visit GoSeawolves.org/tickets or call (631) 632-WOLF.
