About the Game
With just 24 hours of rest, Stony Brook heads to Connecticut for a stiff challenge against the nationally ranked Huskies. Yesterday, the Seawolves had an outstanding performance in an 82-75 win over Canisius. This is the first time since November 2001 that Stony Brook is playing two regular season games on back-to-back days. This is the fifth all-time meeting between the two teams, and the Huskies have won all four previous matchups, one at Gampel (2010), the other three (2008, 2005, 2000) in Hartford. Except for 2010, the Huskies have been nationally ranked heading into this matchup, but that 2010-11 UConn squad went on to win the national championship. This is a homecoming for Seawolves head coach Steve Pikiell, who played at UConn (1986-91) under Jim Calhoun.
The Huskies are under first-year head coach Kevin Ollie, who took over for retiring Jim Calhoun. They came into the season unranked, but knocked off Michigan State in the season opener and built a 4-0 record to climb up to No. 21 in the AP Poll and No. 23 in the Coaches Poll. The Huskies are coming off an appearance in the U.S. Virgin Islands Paradise Jam, finishing as runner-up to New Mexico. UConn is led by Shabazz Napier, who is averaging 21.2 points while shooting 43% from the field. Uncharacteristically for a UConn team, the Huskies are sporting a -8.6 rebounding margin and have been outrebounded in all five games.
Last Time Out
Anthony Jackson (21) and Jameel Warney (18) each scored career highs in points, and Tommy Brenton had 14 rebounds, nine points and six assists to lead the Seawolves to an 82-75 win over previously unbeaten Canisius. The Seawolves were dominant in the paint, outrebounding Canisius 47-32, leading 34-28 in paint points and pouring in 21 second chance points on 19 offensive rebounds.
