Cambridge, Mass. - The America East announced Thursday that three former Stony Brook standouts were named as the conference's scholar-athlete in their respective sports. Baseball's Tyler Johnson, men's lacrosse's Kyle Moeller and outdoor track & field's Lucy Van Dalen were cited.

Johnson, the America East Pitcher of the Year and an All-American by multiple publications, graduated with a 3.7 GPA in history. He's the program's all-time leader in wins (35), including postseason victories in the Coral Gables Regional and Baton Rouge Super Regional. A 33rd-round pick by the Oakland Athletics, Johnson was instrumental in leading Stony Brook to its first-ever appearance in the College World Series.

Moeller started all 31 games in two years with the Seawolves. The team's best close defenseman, Moeller totaled 40 ground balls and 27 caused turnovers as a senior. He led Stony Brook back to the NCAA Tournament with five ground balls and three caused turnovers in the America East Championship victory over Albany. Moeller, who graduated with a 3.88 GPA and a degree in business management, was drafted by the Long Island Lizards of Major League Lacrosse.

Arguably Stony Brook's most decorated student-athlete, Van Dalen captured the school's first national championship with a victory in the mile at the NCAA Indoor Championships. She also earned All-America honors in the 1,500 at the Outdoor Championships. Most recently, she achieved the Olympic 'A' standard in the 1,500, and is awaiting an invitation to the London Olympics by her native New Zealand. Having already graduated with a bachelor's in sociology, Van Dalen is near completion of a master's in liberal studies.

To be an America East Scholar-Athlete, the student-athlete must be a starter or prominent reserve in one of the eight sponsored spring sports and carry a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.30.

Johnson, Moeller and Van Dalen are now eligible for the America East Male or Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year to be announced later this summer.
