Courtney at the Head of His CLASS (Stony Brook University feature)
Overland Park, Kan. - Senior Kevin Courtney (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) of the Stony Brook baseball team has been named a Senior CLASS Award first-team All-American. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
Courtney, who was named a candidate for the Senior CLASS Award on March 5 and one of 10 finalists on April 30, was one of four runner-ups to winner Andrew Morales of UC Irvine.
Courtney was a four-year starter for the #Seawolves and has been integral towards the team's success. In 2011, he was an America East All-Rookie team selection after hitting .306 for a team that won 42 games. In 2012, he helped Stony Brook advance to the College World Series after hitting .293 with 38 RBI and earning NCAA Coral Gables Regional All-Tournament honors. He will be remembered for making a diving catch in the stands in game one of the NCAA Super Regional at LSU and hitting a home run off of future Baltimore Orioles pitcher Kevin Gausman in game two. In 2013, he led America East during conference play by hitting .348 with six homers and 28 RBI on his way to All-America East first team honors.
In 2014, Courtney was named first-team All-America East after finishing in the top five in the league in hitting (.341), on-base percentage (.426), runs scored (44), hits (71), RBI (41), doubles (14), total bases (95) and walks (27).
He finished his career fifth in program history in doubles (53) and ninth in runs batted in (136).
Off the field, Courtney has been involved in numerous community service activities, including taking an active role in Stony Brook's Hurricane Sandy relief in 2012, spending time with veterans at the Long Island Veterans Home, spending the day playing baseball with disabled children at The Miracle League and surprising young cancer patients with presents during the holiday season at the Stony Brook Cancer Center.
