Cambridge, Mass. - Casey Baker (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) of the Stony Brook baseball team has been named America East Rookie of the Week after hitting .600 in a three-game series vs. Maine, the conference office announced Monday.
This is Baker's second Rookie of the Week honor. He also earned the award on March 11 after hitting .667 against Fordham.
The freshman utility player started all three games against Maine at designated hitter and finished not only with a .600 batting average (6-for-10), but also a 1.100 slugging percentage as three of his six hits went for extra bases. He had six RBI over the three games.
Baker tripled twice in the series, each time driving in one run. In game two of the series, he came to bat with a runner on base in each of his four plate appearances and finished 3-for-3 with three RBI. In the series clinching win on Sunday, he tied the game at 1-1 with an RBI single and then gave the #Seawolves an insurance run with an RBI triple in the eighth inning that made it 4-1.
In 31 games this season, Baker is hitting .356 with 15 runs scored and 17 RBI. In conference games only, he is tied for the league lead in triples with two.
Baker and the #Seawolves are 27-15 overall and 13-4 in America East, tied with Hartford for first place in the conference. The team will play NYIT at MCU Park, home of the Brooklyn Cyclones, Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. Then the team will head to UMBC for a three-game series that starts with a single game on Friday at 4 p.m.
