Stony Brook, N.Y. - A pair of Stony Brook baseball pitchers have earned the first weekly honors from America East this season. Junior Frankie Vanderka (Levittown, N.Y.) has been named America East Pitcher of the Week, and freshman Daniel Zamora (La Puente, Calif.) has been named America East Rookie of the Week, the conference office announced Monday.

Vanderka opened 2013 by tossing six shutout innings in the second game of Stony Brook's Saturday doubleheader at Florida International. Vanderka didn't allow more than one baserunner in any of the six innings he pitched, and FIU was 0-for-6 against him with runners on base. He ended up scattering just four hits, walked none and struck out two as he took the no-decision in Stony Brook's 3-0 loss.

Zamora had a sparkling collegiate debut, giving up just one run on five hits in six innings pitched. He walked one and struck out six, five of which were looking. He threw 56 of his 83 pitches for strikes, good for a 67.5 percent strike rate. He suffered the tough-luck loss in the game as the Seawolves were blanked 1-0.

Vanderka and Zamora were a big reason why the Seawolves pitchers posted a 2.12 ERA in the final 17 innings of the three-game series against the Panthers.

Stony Brook will be back in action this weekend as the Seawolves take on No. 1 North Carolina in a three-game series beginning Friday at 3 p.m.
