Baseball cruises to sweep of Albany

Albany, N.Y. - The Stony Brook University baseball team pounded out a combined 31 hits and scored 22 runs on its way to a doubleheader sweep of the Albany Great Danes on Saturday afternoon. The Seawolves scored six runs in the second and won game one, 9-2 before coasting to a 13-3 victory in the second game.

Junior Travis Jankowski (Lancaster, Pa.) had a combined four hits and five RBI in the doubleheader. Senior Pat Cantwell (West Islip, N.Y.) had three hits in the second game while junior William Carmona (Hempstead, N.Y.) drove in four runs.

Senior Tyler Johnson (Chatsworth, Calif.) started the opener and allowed just two runs in 5.0 innings to earn the victory. Sophomore Brandon McNitt gave up just two runs in the 7.0 innings in the second game to pick up the win.

Albany grabbed the early lead in the opener with a run in the first but the Seawolves then blew the game open with six runs in the second, sending 10 batters to the plate.

The Great Danes got a run back in the fourth but the Seawolves answered back with two runs in the fifth on a sacrifice fly from sophomore Kevin Courtney (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) and an RBI single from Jankowski. Junior G.C. Yerry (West Shokan, N.Y.) tossed 2.0 scoreless innings of relief to finish the game.

Stony Brook jumped on the Great Danes at the start in the second game, scoring two runs in the first on a Carmona RBI single and a run-scoring double from freshman Kevin Krause (Staten Island, N.Y.).

SBU added three runs in the second highlighted by an RBI triple from freshman Cole Peragine (Belle Ewart, Ontario) and an RBI double from junior Maxx Tissenbaum (Toronto, Ontario).



The Seawolves then put the game away with four runs in the fourth highlighted by a run-scoring triple from Jankowski and a run-scoring single from Krause.

The teams wrap up the four-game set with a doubleheader on Sunday beginning at noon.
