Box Score

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Justin Echevarria had a two-run homer and Michael Tansey had three hits and two RBI in leading the Stony Brook baseball team to a 5-4 victory and series sweep over the visiting Maine Black Bears. Stony Brook reaches .500 for the first time this season and goes to 12-12, 4-0. Maine is 5-18, 0-4.

Rob Leonard led off the bottom of the second for the Seawolves with a line-drive double to center field. Tansey followed with a single to right center driving in Leonard for a 1-0 lead. With one out, Echevarria homered off the scoreboard in right-center field, giving the home team a 3-0 advantage.

Seawolves' starter Kurt Jung kept Maine's hitters off balance and was aided by two key double plays. In the fourth inning with runners on first and third, Jung induced Brian Hackett into a 6-4-3 twin-killing. Two innings later, with runners on first and second, Kevin McAvoy lined a shot off Jung that shot out to the shortstop Keith Fier. Fier calmly stepped on second and threw to first for inning-ending double play.

Stony Brook scored a run each in the fifth and sixth inning.

Maine scored a run in the seventh, eight and ninth but Matt Lyons shut the door striking out three batters over and inning and a third to collect his second save of the season.

Jung moves to 3-1 on the season. Maine starter A.J. Balsinde took the loss and is now 0-3.

Stony Brook is back on the diamond on Tuesday, April 10, when the team travels to Staten Island to take on Wagner. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 pm.
