Stony Brook, N.Y. – After becoming the first team since New Hampshire in 2003 to sweep the America East Championships last season, both the Stony Brook men’s and women’s cross country teams came in at No. 12 in the NCAA Division I Cross Country Northeast Region preseason rankings, the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) has announced.
The Seawolves lead a pack of America East teams as the Vermont and New Hampshire women were tabbed No. 12 and No. 14, respectively, and the Maine men were slotted at No. 15.
No stranger to the poll, the Stony Brook women claimed the top spot in 2008 and ranked 12th nationally in 2010. The men have been ranked as high as tenth, also in 2008.
SB opens its season with two consecutive home meets with the Stony Brook Season Opener Saturday at 10:30 a.m. and the Wolfie Invitational Saturday, Sept. 14 at 10:30 a.m. The women are vying for their seventh straight conference crown, which would tie them with Boston University for the most consecutive America East Championships, after more than a half-decade of dominance in the league. Looking to build a tradition of their own, the men are shooting for their second America East title in a row.
