Cambridge, Mass. - Junior Olivia Burne and sophomore Eric Speakman of the Stony Brook cross country team have been named America East Scholar-Athletes for the fall semester, conference administrators announced Friday.

Scholar-Athletes are members of teams in the six America East-sponsored championship sports for the fall season including men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, field hockey and volleyball. A committee of athletic administrators and NCAA Faculty Athletics Representatives selects an honoree for each sport based on their performances on the field and in the classroom. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must have a minimum cumulative grade-point average of a 3.30 and be a starter or prominent reserve.

Burne, a native of Imerston, New Zealand, is the fifth-straight Seawolf to garner cross country scholar-athlete honors. She finished first on her squad and fourth overall in the championship race as Stony Brook won its sixth-consecutive conference crown. A two-time all-conference selection, Burne finished in the top-25 at the NCAA Northeast meet to earn a spot on the USTFCCCA All-Region team. Burne, who majors in journalism and holds a 3.94 GPA, has been named to the America East’s All-Academic team three times, its Commissioner’s Honor Roll four times and Stony Brook’s Dean’s List five times.

Speakman, a repeat Scholar-Athlete, was the individual champion at the 2012 America East Cross Country Championship with a race-winning time of 25:11.43. The two-time all-conference honoree finished 20th in the NCAA Northeast Regional to earn USTFCCCA all-region accolades for the second-straight year. A Napier, New Zealand native, Speakman is double majoring in business management and economics and has a 3.86 GPA. He has been named to the America East’s All-Academic team twice, is a three-time member of the America East Commissioner’s Honor Roll and has made SBU’s Dean’s List five times.

Burne and Speakman are eligible for the America East’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year award to be announced by league officials this summer.
