New Britain, Conn. – In his first race of the season, defending America East individual champion Eric Speakman took fifth in 15:12.09 to pace the Stony Brook men’s cross country team to a fourth-place finish at the Central Connecticut Mini Meet Friday afternoon. Stony Brook beat out conference foes UMass-Lowell and New Hampshire, who placed fifth and sixth in a field of 15 programs, respectively.
The women’s team rested many of its upperclassmen, giving the freshmen and sophomores valuable collegiate experience. Sophomore Robin Lynn nabbed 27th in 10:35.87, while classmate Tara Peck was 35th in 10:40.57. Freshman Megan Cooney clocked in at 10:46.88 and placed 46th out of 137 participants from 15 teams.
Providence swept the Mini Meet.
The Seawolves will next look to defend their America East titles Saturday, Nov. 2 at Binghamton University. The women’s team is vying for its seventh straight conference crown, which would tie Boston University’s record for most consecutive championships in America East history, while the men’s team is looking to win its second title in a row.
