Princeton, N.J. -

Sophomore Eric Speakman (Napier, New Zealand) took fifth to lead the Stony Brook men's cross country team at the 2011 Princeton Invitational on Saturday morning.

Speakman, who ran his best race as a Seawolf, ran the 8K course in 25:04, nearly missing third place by three seconds.

"Today was one of the best team performances we have had in terms of the effort put forth by each of the guys on the line.," coach Andy Ronan said.  "They showed what they can achieve when they commit fully to the task, even if they don't feel 100% physically or mentally on the day. It was encouraging to see that type of effort as we approach the conference championships in two weeks."

The squad, which finished seventh out of 14 schools, received quality performances from senior Drew Dillingham (Riverhead, N.Y.), who took 32nd (25:33), and sophomore Carlos Roa (Jamaica, N.Y.), who placed 35th (25:35).

Senior Gerard Harley (Setauket, N.Y.) and sophomore Daniel Denis (Bayport, N.Y.) also scored for Stony Brook.

The men's and women's squads will be back in action on Friday, October 21 at the Central Connecticut Mini Meet.
