Stony Brook, N.Y. - Sophomore Daniel Denis (Bayport, N.Y.) and junior Annie Keown (Auckland, New Zealand) each led the Stony Brook men's and women's cross country teams to a first-place finish at the Stony Brook Season Opener on Saturday.

Denis crossed the finish line in 19:10.34 and Keown finished in 14:45.02. The men's race was a 6K and the women's a 4K.

Junior Carlos Roa (Jamaica, N.Y.) placed third (19:27.42), freshman Mitchell Kun (Brooklyn, N.Y.) took sixth (19:56.53) and sophomore Tyler Frigge (Suffern, N.Y.) finished ninth (20:11.69). Junior James Snak (Smithtown, N.Y.) placed 12th (20:18.79) and junior Nicholas Lemon (Middletown, Conn.) took 14th (20:21.01) as six Seawolves finished in the top 15.

On the women's side, four athletes joined Keown in the top 10. Senior Lorraine McCarthy (Waterford, Ireland) placed second in 15:01.76 and freshman Christina Melian (Staten Island, N.Y.) finished fourth (15:08.22), joining Keown and McCarthy in the top five.

Freshman Tara Peck (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) took sixth in 15:17.25 and senior Kristal Conklin (Middletown, N.Y.) crossed in seventh (15:17.25).

"It was nice to get the season underway this morning," coach Andy Ronan said. Both squads have a lot of new faces and it was encouraging to see some of them get their Stony Brook careers off to a strong start. It's always nice to see the returners come back in good shape. It's early and we need to take advantage of the next eight weeks if we are to end the season in the fashion we are used to."

Stony Brook is back in action in two weeks when it hosts the first annual Wolfie Invitational on September 15 at 10:30 a.m.
