Bretton Woods, N.H. - Junior Taylor Gillie of the Stony Brook volleyball team and classmate Adam Davies of the Stony Brook men's track and field team have been named to the first-ever America East Helping Hands Team. The distinction recognizes a male and female student-athlete from each of the conference's nine member institutions for their dedication to bettering their communities through service.

Each school, at its discretion, selected a male and female student-athlete for the honor.

Gillie has placed on the Dean's List four times, the America East Honor Roll twice (Fall 2011 and 2012) and the Commissioner's Honor Roll once (Fall 2013). The Fort Wayne, Ind., native received the Undergraduate Recognition Award for community service and was selected to be a Stony Brook Student Ambassador.

She volunteers weekly at the Stony Brook University Cancer Center. As Co-President of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), Gillie led the group in collecting food for the Thanksgiving Food Drive, which ultimately donated nearly 1,000 food items to the on-campus pantry. She spearheaded the SAAC Relay for Life Team that raised nearly $2,500 for cancer research. Over the winter, Gillie visited local elementary schools to read to the students and speak to them about the importance of working hard in school. She serves as a Follow the PACK mentor to incoming freshmen and transfers and Midnight Breakfast volunteer.

A health science major, Davies volunteers weekly at the Stony Brook University Cancer Center through the Play it Forward program. In the fall, he visited a local elementary school to spend time with the students during their annual Fall Festival. The Dean's List honoree helped his team collect food items for the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee's highly-successful Thanksgiving Food Drive.

Davies attended the NCAA APPLE Conference in January and has worked to redesign the upcoming student-athlete orientation. He participated Walk for Beauty, Relay for Life, Peer Advising Night and Midnight Breakfast.
